Palm oil on sandown beach by john draper

Warning for dog walkers as palm oil returns to some Isle of Wight beaches

Several readers have been in touch warning that Palm Oil has been seen washed up on Isle of Wight beaches in the last few days.

The white chalky substance can be fatal for animals if ingested.

Sightings have been reported on beaches in Ryde, Brook, Yaverland, Sandown and Bouldnor.

Don’t touch without gloves
Previous advice given by the Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue service was,

“Wear double vinyl gloves and place a strong plastic bag over the substance and bag it up, place the outer gloves in with the oil, tie it off, then place into a second strong bag and also tie off. This can be disposed of in ordinary refuse.”

Thanks to Sue Cullip for bringing it to our attention.
