Ambluance parking only

Was spelling blunder on hospital sign an April Fool?

Oh dear, looks as though whoever produces the signage for the Isle of Wight NHS Trust might be receiving a few calls today.

Can you spot the glaring error in this sign snapped by Stuey Hamilton outside the A&E department at St Mary’s Hospital, Newport yesterday (Wednesday).

Stuey said, “I genuinely thought it was an elaborate April Fool’s Day joke at first hahaha. But nope.”

OnTheWight have contacted the IW NHS Trust to see whether they knew about the error.

It’s a symptom of an all-pervasive late 20th Century/early 21st Century disease called NOTCHECKINGitis. Not confined to the Isle of Wight but systemic everywhere. The disease really took off with the advent of speed-of-light technology. Just push the button – DONE.

If it’s a prank it’s a foolishly expensive one. I can’t imagine they’d go to the considerable expense of fabricating a sign with a spelling mistake for a laugh. And if they have then what an idiotic waste of money. It doesn’t feel like an April Fool’s joke though mainly because it just isn’t funny enough. Or at all. The only vaguely amusing thing is that someone… Read more »

But wait! There is a more fundamental error than a mere Grauniad typo……
The notice says ‘Ambluance Parking Only’ and then proceeds to list all the restrictions for ordinary car-parking, including a warning NOT to park in an area reserved for emergency vehicles and that disabled drivers must park in a designated disabled bay. Which is it?

Its quite obviously both.

Ambulance parking only.

Cars must park in designated bays.

There are quite obviously NO designated bays in areas reserved for ambulances only – therefore cars must find an area where there ARE designated bays.

Theres being observant and picking up on mistakes, and then theres just being pedantic and apparent refusal to use common sense.

its sad when people have nothing better to do than pick up on minor spelling mistakes. this hospital sign is clear enough even if it is spelt incorrectly. just as my comment is clear enough even though i missed an apostrophe. just for you, heres my final line again. without the apostrophe. just to infuriate you. Theres being observant and picking up on mistakes, and then theres… Read more »

I guess Sign-makers are rarely academics – although spell checking would seem to me an important part of the job?

My hospital spies tell me that this sign was provided by the car park contractor, mainlanders wot dun it, not the usual local outfit.

By the way, the small print is astonishing. A relative could die in the time you took to read the dam* thing, let alone find a free parking space.

TS, I think you mean a vacant space – there’s no free parking at St Mary’s !

Oh dear! Looks like someone forgot to check their punctuation!
Clue: second paragraph.
