UNICEF estimate 2.2 billion people collect water in canisters and jerry cans often walking long distances.
Isle of Wight based international charity and NGO, Roll Out the Barrel, have been honoured and recognised on World Water Day with a Certificate of Appreciation from Rotary International presented by past President and Rotarian, Mac Purcell from Rotary and Great Britain and Ireland Hub.
The only one addressing this serious problem
Of the hundreds of water charities worldwide, Roll Out The Barrel is uniquely the only one addressing this serious problem.
It is dedicated to sending Rotary Water Barrels to women and children (as young as four) around the world who currently draw their water from streams and rivers in buckets or jerry cans, carrying that water over long distances, sometimes as far as six miles every day, usually on their heads or backs.
Nearly 10,000 Rotary barrels distributed
With a Rotary Water Barrel they roll their water, quickly, easily and with no burden.
The award is recognition of the work undertaken by the charity with Rotary International clubs and NGOs over the past ten years with nearly 10,000 Rotary barrels distributed in that time across Africa and Asia.
Brewer: ROTB is the sum of the parts
Adrian Brewer (volunteer CEO) said,
“This award is much appreciated and is for everyone worldwide who has ever made a contribution to helping these women and children have an easier life.
“Whether sticking on a stamp or loading a container, delivering other forms of aid the charity is involved with, in fact everyone who has helped or donated over the years, this award is for them.
“ROTB is the sum of the parts. My personal thanks to all.”
