Weather warning for gale force winds across parts of the Isle of Wight tonight

The Isle of Wight Met Service has issued a yellow weather warning for strong wind tonight (Friday).

Valid from 3pm today until 2am on Saturday the warning reads:

The first strong low pressure system of the Autumn will run eastwards between Iceland and Scotland, and this will bring strong to gale force winds across the country.

Along the English Channel coasts and hills we are expecting wind gusts reaching up to around 50-60mph in places along with spells of persistent and rather heavy rain.

It must be noted that this warning is still based upon our summer warning threshold which reverts back to the winter threshold on 1st October, meaning that the warning is based on somewhat lower wind speeds than we might sometimes see during the autumn winter period, however we have taken this into consideration and only issued a warning for the most exposed parts of the Island.

Impacts, effects and measures

  • Falling leaves, twigs and other tree debris affecting roads and walkways
  • Rather difficult driving conditions, especially around exposed coasts and hills due to driving rain, spray and gusty winds
  • Large waves (10-12ft) around windward coasts creating hazardous conditions for small watercraft
  • Disruptions and cancellations on some public transport including cross Solent travel
