Westridge Farm: Motion to recall West Acre Park planning application to committee

A motion to recall the West Acre Park planning application has been submitted by Deputy Chairman of the council, Cllr Claire Critchison (Green Alliance).

The contentious application for 472 new homes on the site of Westridge Farm was approved by the Planning Committee on 27th July 2021.

Motion for recall
Cllr Critchison is calling for the application to be brought back to the Planning Committee for further determination as soon as is practicable.

Her motion also asks that:

Until such time as the committee have reached a further determination of the application the planning permission for ‘West Acre Park’ may not be issued.

Where and when
The Planning Committee takes place on Tuesday 25th January 2022 from 4pm at County Hall.

One of the reasons given for this application was that it is a ‘sustainable’ development.

I’m not at all sure how effectively causing a working farm to shut down qualifies as ‘sustainable’.

Perhaps an extensive legal definition, or redefinition, of the word is needed to include an overview not just the nature of the proposed development.

The Ryde waste water system is collapsing, the roads are not suitable for any further traffic but overriding everything else is that this development is utterly impossible to justify in terms of sustainability, climate change and the desecration of the Island countryside let alone food production. While I undrthe need for more homes, I cannot condone the building of houses on a working farm. I agree that the planning permission should be rebrand if at all possible, rescinded as not only is this a disaster for the Island but will be seen as opening the door to similar developments elsewhere. Stop the building before it’s too late.

I have never witnessed a traffic issue in Ryde which isn’t momentary. I drive through regularly on buses, in my car, in taxis. All times of day and night. Sewers , yep, but that’s an island wide issue. Fixable. I’d be kern to know how viable this farm actually is.
