We were taken aback to see a report today that Wetherspoons in Ryde has been voted best traditional pub by the IW Council and the Police.
Best traditional pub? We’ve only been in their once before, but could certainly think of many other pubs on the Wight that qualify for the accolade of ‘best traditional pub’.
We then read that Yates’ in Newport had also been awarded best late-night venue. Eh?
All Bar None Awards
Thankfully we went on to discover that the awards were presented to those who have taken part in the accreditation scheme, that being only 23 across the Island. Phew!
The scheme has been introduced by the Isle of Wight Council and the Police in order to encourage owners of licensed premises to make sure their pubs, bars and restaurants are safe places for the public to use.
Chair of the Isle of Wight Council Licensing Committee, Cllr Susan Scoccia said: “The scheme is helping to build positive relationships between the licensed trade, the police and the local authority.”
