Wetherspoons Best Pub On The Wight? We were taken aback to see a report today that Wetherspoons in Ryde has been voted best traditional pub by the IW Council and the Police.

Best traditional pub? We’ve only been in their once before, but could certainly think of many other pubs on the Wight that qualify for the accolade of ‘best traditional pub’.

We then read that Yates’ in Newport had also been awarded best late-night venue. Eh?

All Bar None Awards
Thankfully we went on to discover that the awards were presented to those who have taken part in the accreditation scheme, that being only 23 across the Island. Phew!

The scheme has been introduced by the Isle of Wight Council and the Police in order to encourage owners of licensed premises to make sure their pubs, bars and restaurants are safe places for the public to use.

Chair of the Isle of Wight Council Licensing Committee, Cllr Susan Scoccia said: “The scheme is helping to build positive relationships between the licensed trade, the police and the local authority.”

Typical – the Council trying to force themselves into an area that they add nothing to.

If the ‘bad’ pubs aren’t doing what they should be doing, the licensing committee should be taking their license away, not coming up with nonsense like this.

April Fools has come early! Weatherspoons is about as far from a traditional pub as you could get. It was built as a department store and still has the feel of a shop.

god knows what tourists will think when they see the sign behind the bar saying it’s the best traditional pub on the island.

Why don’t you/we instigate an annual award for Best Real Pub, Best Food Pub, Best Restaraunt, Best Takeaway. Run it in conjunction with Local Camra and Matt & Cat along with VB members votes and get local businesses to sponsor each award…I’ll happily do one

Publicize it on here and in CP/Radio etc.

Lets put these clowns to shame
