Boat covered by landslide debris

Wheeler’s Bay landslide: Mud can be seen in water as far as Ventnor beach (photos)

Following the persistent torrential rain earlier today, the cliff at Wheeler’s Bay, halfway between Ventnor and Bonchurch has fallen victim to a landslide.

Debris from the side of the cliff, including mud, rock and chalk fell onto a local fisherman’s boat and tractor, covering the boat’s engine.

Evidence of the landslide can be seen in the water as far as the western end of Ventnor Bay, as shown in the photos below.

Following the theft of its engine a couple of years ago, the boat was chained to a concrete block, making it hard to retrieve in time.

Safety first
Despite some of the loose rocks and mud still falling, several walkers made their way over the debris to get to the other side of the revetment.

Engineers were on the scene and Island Roads have been informed.
