We all know that Isle of Wight tomatoes taste delicious, and following a competition hosted by the Tomato Growers’ Association a couple of weeks ago, it’s official for a second year running.
Tomato growers from Wight Salads managed to sweep the board in the Tastiest Tomato Competition, which was held at West Dean Gardens (near Chichester) on 6th and 7th September 2008.
Paul Howlett picked up first prize for his ‘Apero’ red cherry tomato. As he wasn’t able to attend in person, Kieran Devine (pictured) picked up The Summerton Cup on his behalf, as well as accepting third prize for his own ‘Sweetie’ red cherry tomatoes.
‘Organic Piccolo’, another red cherry tomato won Ben Smith second prize as judged by the three experts in the field; Sarah Wain, Garden Supervisor at West Dean Gardens; Terry Marshall, horticulturist, tomato grower and author of the book Tomatoes, and Barbara Wilson, Catering Manager for West Dean College.
The Summerton Cup is named after the late, great Len Summerton, gardener and tomato fan from Southampton, was presented by his daughter Kate Armes.
Congratulations to all concerned and well done for flying the flag for the Isle of Wight once again!
