Wight Shipyard leads green revolution for UK’s first zero-emission hybrid ferry

Last updated:

The Earth Clipper, a pioneering vessel constructed by Wight Shipyard, has clinched the title of Best River Ferry at the prestigious 2023 Baird Maritime Awards.

Baird Maritime say the combination of an ambitious owner, a visionary designer, and an exceptional builder has led to the creation of a truly innovative ferry.

A beacon of British engineering
Built on the Isle of Wight, this vessel represents the culmination of efforts by the skilled team at Wight Shipyard, in collaboration with One2Three Naval Architects.

Their work has not only achieved a new standard in ferry design, but has also significantly contributed to environmental conservation efforts.

First zero-emission hybrid electric ferry in the UK
In a time when the call for greener alternatives in all sectors is growing louder, the Earth Clipper stands as a beacon of innovation.

It’s the first zero-emission hybrid electric ferry in the UK, combining both energy storage and hybrid propulsion systems.

Advancements in green technology
These vessels are constructed entirely from aluminium, making them not only lightweight, but also exceptionally safe.

Their shallow draught and high-efficiency design contribute to their remarkable performance. Equipped with twin diesel engines, these ferries can reach speeds of up to 28 knots.

A smooth, quiet and completely emission-free journey
However, it is their ability to operate at 12 knots using battery power alone that truly sets them apart, offering a smooth, quiet, and completely emission-free journey.

Congratulations to all involved in the project, especially the team at Wight Shipyard.
