Isle of Wight connectors and cable manufacturers lead by Roma, the Director of Powersure, and Leanne, the Director of Triangle Cables, are proud to announce the sponsorship of the Wight Wolves rugby team’s brand new kit ready for the start of their new season.
Claire Mumford, (Chunky Wolf ) Wight Wolves captain, said,
“The new kit gives us a sense of identity, really bringing our team together and empowering us to play at another level.
“Looking sharp and with local commitment and investment to the teams future boosts our already keen passion to see island ladies and girls rugby progress on the island, and our Wolf pack to evolve into the team we aspire to be.”
Wight Wolves coach, Nathan Tombleson, said,
“After the success of last season, with the support of friends and family to get players to the fixtures, it is great to now have local businesses sponsorship supporting the Wolves going from strength to strength.”
Enthusiasm and enjoyment more important results
Last season Wight Wolves came back from time out enforced by Covid and entered the Hampshire Ladies Touch Rugby League. Starting with a home tournament at IWRFC, where their inexperience as a new team showed, unfortunately finishing seventh, however their enthusiasm and enjoyment was much more important than their results.
As the season progressed the Wolves saw their numbers fluctuate, sometimes playing with no subs, or even only five members at one tournament when there should be seven. But what stayed the same was their dedication and eagerness to compete and the Wolves managed to finish tournaments in fifth, third and a well fought for first place.
Finished the league in third place
Overall Wight Wolves were ecstatic to finish the league in third place.
Coming back to rugby after Covid has been a struggle for many Wolves; jobs, family and life is so busy but it’s the part of the week where we get some time out from everything else.
Nell Cranky Beans said,
“Rugby is very much a whole team effort… I love the camaraderie despite some of the age differences! Plus a little bit of fitness thrown in as a bonus. It makes me proud to be part of the Island’s only female team.”
Training continues
Whilst the touch league finished in June, the Wolves kept on training, running touch rugby in the place of normal training all through the summer and joining in with the summer touch sessions at IWRFC and Ventnor RFC. The Wolves also tried beach rugby, utilising the area from South Island Sevens beach rugby tournament, and providing an interactive session at the County Show.
The Wolves were thrilled to travel to Twickenham in April to watch the Red Roses, in the final match of the Six Nations, beat France to win the championship.
The Wight Wolves were also excited to win a set of training balls from the RFU over the summer, for their commitment to continuing training and team engagement as part of the #playtogetherstaytogether campaign.
Join in with the training
The Wight Wolves currently train at Wootton Rec on Wednesday evenings, with the clubhouse open from 5.30pm for training to start at 6pm. Training is open to girls and ladies U14 and up and there are options for touch rugby only, contact rugby, or a bit of both.
No experience or knowledge of rugby is necessary, however the ability to enjoy having a go is a must!
Hampshire Ladies Touch League
