Donors presenting the cheques

WightAID allocates £8,000 to local causes, helping Isle of Wight’s communities

Six good causes on the Isle of Wight have benefitted from the latest donations from WightAID.

A total of £7,925 was distributed at a recent ceremony at IFPL near Shalfleet.

Donors presented the cheques
Two WightAID donors, Paul Thomas from Isle of Wight Tomatoes and Paul Thorley from Vehicle Consulting Solent, presented the cheques

The biggest winner was Isle of Wight Pantries, which received £5,000.

This funding will allow the charity to buy food to make a huge difference to Iow-income families on the Island.

Ventnor and District Local History Society
The other big donation in this round was to Ventnor and District Local History Society.

It received a new scanner and laptop which will help the ambitious job of digitising audio and photographic artefacts.

Daisy Chains
Daisy Chains IW received a grant towards extending their pitch at the IW Festival.

Mandy Fuller from the charity said,

“We were delighted to receive a grant from WightAID to support our fundraising at the Isle of Wight Festival this year.

“We have a pop-up tea and cake café that over the years has become very busy.

“The grant allowed us to add another marquee, which gave us more space for serving and we were able to buy more seating.

“This enabled us to serve more people this year, increasing our income.

Huge thanks to WightAID for their support, it really makes a huge difference to what we do.”

Other grants
Other smaller grants of under £500 went to the following:

  • East Cowes Partnership to purchase equipment for a new drop-in session for 0-4 year old children.
  • Shanklin Regatta, which has been established since 1853, received a grant towards purchasing banners and posters for its free fun day on the beach on 8th August.
  • The Starlight Academy’s grant will help take five Starlight dancers to the finals of the Global Dance Open competition in The Netherlands.

Geoff Underwood, founder of WightAID, thanked each charity for the amazing work they do, and for their dedication to Island life.

More than £650,000 to 230+ local causes
WightAID has distributed over £650,000 to more than 230 local charities. Donors are primarily local businesses, but also many individuals who all have a passion for the Island.

Geoff said,

“It is great to support all these good causes but we can only do it with the help of the individuals and businesses who put their hands in their pockets.

“We are grateful for that support.”
