With heavy snow predicted by the Met Office for the Hampshire area tomorrow, Islanders may be concerned to hear that the Government has instructed the Isle of Wight Council to reduce its salt usage by up to 60%.
It’s part of a national rationing scheme introduced to counter the fact that demand has exceeded supply during the ‘cold snap’.
The Isle of Wight Council are not alone in the forced reduction, but the knock on effect is that roads which will receive salt have been prioritised and some identified to not be treated (listed below).
The council tells us that “routes key to the Island’s infrastructure will continue to be treated but motorists need to be aware that some routes that are normally treated may become icy during periods of cold weather.”
Peter Hayward, Isle of Wight Council Head of Highways and Transport said: “The Government has directed local authorities across the country to reduce salt usage so that resources can be conserved and allocated where they are most needed. We have responded accordingly and revised our road treatment plans in order to cope with the reduction in the supply of salt while ensuring that we have enough to keep main routes safe during periods of sub zero temperatures. Drivers should take extra care over coming weeks as some routes that were previously treated may now be affected by ice.”
