Head Judge Martin Pearce said,
“The winning scheme showed great sensitivity in extending an important historic building, one of the few remaining toll road cottages.
“Whilst of a small scale and modest budget the proposal dealt with the difficulties of a steeply sloping site and used this to its advantage providing a series of internal changes in level which focused on the beautiful views.
“The building was both modern yet in choice of materials felt in harmony with the particularities of the place, winning scheme demonstrated that good architecture is based on thoroughly understanding the client’s requirements and responding to these in an innovative manner to bring about a sense of light, space and joy to this smallest of projects.”

“The runner up was a sophisticated solution to the extension of this seafront cottage. Careful consideration had been given to the articulation of the new structure from that which existed using a glazed link.
“The creation of fine courtyard showed how the landscape design was considered as an integral part of building and was used to create sense of intimacy and privacy. The exquisite use of carefully detailed materials resulted in a beautifully crafted building that was both elegant and refined.”
