Womble Wendy (And Her Volunteers) Worked Wonders

After a busy couple of months, we decided to take last weekend off and do whatever took our fancy.

A load of rubbishThe blue skies and warm sunshine on Sunday morning led us down to Ventnor Skate Park to take part in Womble Wendy’s monthly litter pick.

This was the first time that Wendy had tackled the area around the Skate Park and the six of us who were busy collecting all manner of rubbish, managed to fill nine black bin liners and recycle over 20 glass bottles.

As always, Wendy provided the bags, as well as litter-grabbers, making the experience a whole lot easier on the knees and back.

Massive variety of rubbish
Tins, cans, broken glass, plastic bags, items of clothing, sweet and crisp packets made up most of what we collected. Not to mention the burnt-down road cone and even an old network adaptor from 1991.

Sunday's litter pickers

As well as concentrating on rubbish around the Skate Park, some of us also ventured along the cliffs, with the litter-picking becoming more and more addictive as aluminium cans and crisp packets shined out to us from the undergrowth.

The Big Society is alive and kicking
At a time when the Prime Minister, David Cameron, is ‘encouraging’ citizens to become more and more involved in the ‘Big Society’, he only needs to come to the Isle of Wight to see that it’s already happening here and not because the Government are instructing people to do it.

As regular VB readers will know, unpaid for her efforts, Wendy works very hard to help keep Ventnor clean and tidy for residents and visitors alike.

So, all praise to Wendy, she does a fantastic job and deserves to be more widely recognised.

Well done also to the other volunteers, Sue, Don and Alpha who also worked hard gathering rubbish for almost two hours. Womble Pistache kept us all on our toes, regularly checking up on us as she happily investigated the area – tail constantly wagging.

Details of next month’s litter pick coming up soon on VB.
