Womble Wendy Collects Six Bags of Rubbish

Huge praise should go to Ventnorian, Womble Wendy, who if you read on, you’ll discover does an amazing job of keeping our local area clean and tidy. She’s not paid to do so, but chooses to spend some of her free time tidying up after the litter bugs. If you know of someone in your area who does something similar and deserves praise, let us know. Womble Wendy Collects Six Bags of Rubbish On Sunday 22nd August, Womble Wendy litter picked Cowleaze Hill. This is a popular area with tourist cars and coaches who pull in and stop to look at the view across Shanklin and Sandown Bay to Culver Down.

Anyone who knows the area will remember that there’s a seat with a little bin next to it. The footpath by the main road from the bottom of Cowleaze Hill, where there is a seat up to the near the top of Cowleaze Hill where footpath 558 starts was litter picked.

The work was about to begin
Then the field on the other side of the fence, was also litter picked.

This rubbish had become more noticeable since the cows have been grazing and had trampled down the long grass and bracken. Over the last week, if you’d driven past or been on a coach who’d have been able to seen the huge amount of litter.

What a sight for visitors to see! Nice view, shame about the rubbish.

In an hour and a half, six bags of rubbish was collected. Lots of the usual bottles and cans of drinks, but also a couple of plastic bottles of car engine oil, an umbrella (which had been there a very long time), plastic garden pots, a children’s inflatable paddling pool, a large cotton sheet, a car battery, broken wheel trims and even a Police Slow sign!

Off to landfill
All the rubbish was disposed of in the correct way but this time it all went straight to landfill. There was too much to be sorted out.

The IW Council have been notified of the car battery and paddling pool for them to dispose of.

The Police sign has been cleaned up and will be returned to them.

Remember, litter can kill
The Wombles do not know who owns this field. It may be privately owned, but the cows are very happy now, they wandered across to say thank you.

There is so much wildlife on this small stretch of road inclding badgers, foxes, rabbits and red squirrels. It’s knowing that they are all happy and safe from injury that makes it so satisfying and puts a smile on the Womble’s face.

Meet this Sunday
Ventnor Wombles are to meet this Sunday 29th August at 11am at Wheelers Bay car park, Cowlease (off Whgeelers Bay Rd). The car park and footpath off it needs a good litter pick.
