Wootton Armed Robbery Witness Appeal

Life on the Isle of Wight is blessed with relatively low crime figures compared to the mainland, so it makes it all the more unusual when we receive information about an armed robbery.

Police tell us that between 9-9.30pm at the Spar Convenience Store in the High Street in Wootton last night, the female shopkeeper was threatened with a knife by a man in his 20s, demanding cash.

He left immediately after, without injury to the shopkeeper, who was obviously pretty shaken by the event.

Detective Sergeant Gary Lyons, from Newport CID, said: “This was a frightening incident for the shopkeeper and we are carrying out a number of enquiries to find this man.

“We know there were a number of people in the area around the time of the robbery who may have witnessed what happened, or seen a man matching the description either before or after the incident.

“I would ask anyone who has any information to contact us as soon as possible.”

The man is described as:
* White
* Aged in his 20s
* At least 6ft
* Slim build
* Wearing a dark blue hooded top with the hood up and a scarf

Anyone with information is asked to phone Det Sgt Gary Lyons at Newport Police Station on 101 or by calling the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.
