Further to the announcement last year of cycle path improvements, this in from the council, in their own words.
Part of the new Newport cross town cycle link has been opened, with works ongoing to complete the remainder of the route.
The cycle link joins the Cowes to Newport and the Newport to Sandown cycle tracks and forms part of the National Cycle Route 23 which travels from Reading to Sandown.
The section of track between Shide Road and Matalan car park has been opened and is already being used by cyclists.
Final works to be completed after cold-snapFinal works to be completed include laying down white lines and green coloured surfacing in East Street, Sea Street and around Coppins Bridge to mark the cycle lane. These will take place once the current cold snap is over as they are weather-dependant.
Once the lines have been installed and the surfacing laid, appropriate signage will be put up and the new pedestrian/cycle crossing in the High Street will be activated.
Other works already completed include the widening and resurfacing of the path between Little London and Riverway, improving this route for both pedestrians and cyclists.
The scheme is being funded thanks to a £100,000 grant from transport charity group Sustrans and match funding secured by the council through developer contributions.
