Shove 'ha penny competitors

World champions compete on the Isle of Wight (in a sport you may never have heard of!)

Past and present world champions were part of the teams that came to Ryde recently to take part in a series of friendly shove ha’penny matches with Isle of Wight players.

The visitors were mainly from Newport, Wales with teams from Shepton Mallet, Somerset and Barnstaple, North Devon

Friday night saw team matches being played at the High Park Tavern, Ryde where the Isle of Wight Team triumphed at a packed evening.

On Saturday, the teams joined forces at the Simeon, Ryde, and a full pairs competition took place with one player from the Island pairing with one of the visitors.

Overall winning pair were John Amber from Newport, Wales with John Brownhill from the other Newport, Isle of Wight!

Plate competition winners were Mick Morgan, Newport, Wales and Richard Adams from Ryde.

Paul Bridges, the visitor’s organiser said

“Thanks for a great weekend, shove, beer, music and good company what more could you ask for?”
