A yacht ran aground this morning at 7:30 3:00 in Ventnor on the rocks beneath the La Falaise car park.
The single-masted yacht, Amorell (possibly a Dockrell 27, was being skippered by a lone yachtsman on a journey from France to Portsmouth.
Sailing overnight, the yachtsman set the instruments and having fallen asleep, some time later awoke on the rocks.
With the boat having been holed and the assessor has been out to see it and has written the boat off. We understand that the yachtsman is safe.
It’s thought that the boat will be left for the sea to break it up, after a previous attempt to move it from the rocks was unsuccessful.
Salvage
The contents of the boat were scattered over the rocks and it in understood that some of them might have been removed.
It’s worth remembering that the law is, contrary to common perception, that wrecked items cannot be taken. It all belongs to the Receiver of Wreck and any items that are retrieved have to be reported using the official form.
Many thanks to those who reported this to us, the first of which was Beryl Stewart-Cummings who did so just after 7:30 this morning. Shame we couldn’t get on to the story earlier.
