Teams of students will be doing their best to impress Isle of Wight Council’s Chief Executive Joe Duckworth during a special challenge on 10 March.
In the style of TV’s popular show ‘The Apprentice’, 30 students will be split into teams of five and set a task with a prize for the winners. It’s part of a competition organised by the Isle of Wight Young Chamber which also involves the teams taking on different challenges set by other organisations and companies such as Wightlink and Liz Earle.
The challenge is being held at County Hall in the Council Chamber between 0900 – 1300. The council task involves a fictional Italian furniture company which is looking at setting up a factory in the UK. It has three locations to choose from, one being the Isle of Wight. The teams’ challenge is to come up with a presentation within 90 minutes that will sell the Island to the Italian firm’s managers and convince them that they should set up on the Isle of Wight.
Council Leader, Cllr David Pugh, will give an introduction to the group before the challenge begins. He said “Although this is a fictional challenge, it is a very important event because it shows our youth just how important attracting investors to the Island is. I am looking forward to seeing the presentations the teams put together and seeing what ideas the students have to sell the Island to potential investors”.
Chief Executive Joe Duckworth said “We at the council have recently revealed our Eco-Island vision for the future and I look forward to seeing how the students will consider major projects like that in their presentation. It will be very interesting to see the ideas of students and how they view the Island when it comes to potential new employers.
