young sailors ready to start their challenge

Young Isle of Wight sailors tackle 92km challenge to support youth sailing opportunities

A group of young sailors from Yarmouth Sailing Club are preparing to sail around the entire Isle of Wight on Friday 14th June.

Thirteen junior members will take on this non-stop challenge to raise funds for the Charles Ridley Cadet Trust.

Over 92km in one day
The team will leave Yarmouth at 5.15am, aiming to complete the full circumnavigation in a single day.

They’ll be sailing in five RS Quest dinghies, covering more than 92km around the Island. The journey could take anywhere between 11 to 18 hours, depending on the conditions.

The challenge will require every sailor to take turns helming for extended periods, testing both their endurance and sailing skills.

Fundraising for youth sailing opportunities
Each year, Yarmouth Sailing Club selects a charity to support. For 2025, they’ve chosen the Charles Ridley Cadet Fund.

The fund was established in memory of a former club member and supports under-18s by providing access to sailing, training and development opportunities.

Through this challenge, the junior sailors are hoping to raise over £750 for the fund.
