At Newchurch Male Voice Choir’s September Serenade Concert on Wednesday, one of the Choir’s guest artistes was 14 year-old India Sully.
India who is a pupil at Christ The King College, entertained the audience with her singing. During the evening the Choir’s Chairman, Rod Riddell and its Musical Director, Roy Bevan, had the pleasure of presenting India with a cheque, as she had been chosen as this year’s recipient of the Bassett Stevens Award.
Bassett Stevens
Bassett had been a professional musician: he sang with, and acted as rehearsal accompanist to, the BBC Singers and the BBC Chorus.
On retiring to the Island he became involved with the Choir during the 1980s and 90s and on his death a Trust Fund was established with the aim of providing financial support to encourage young musicians.
Cooper: A pleasure to encourage India as she progresses
Bob Cooper, for the choir said,
“Knowing how important, and expensive it can be for young people to progress their training in their chosen aspect of music, and with the Choir supporting these ambitions, it was a pleasure to listen to India and to be able to encourage her as she progresses.”
