Newport IW play Blackfield & Langley

If there was a game Newport IW need to win, it would be this Wednesday evening’s huge Sydenhams Wessex League Premier match against the mighty Blackfield & Langley.

Blackfield & Langley:
Superb runs in various cup competitions this season has meant that the Fawley-based team have a huge fixture backlog already, having only played thirteen league games. If they win all their games in hand, which is a big ask at this stage of the season, they go joint top with Downton.

Another factor needing consideration is the financial muscle and their current league form. They have spent out several thousand on players and their last league defeat was way back on 17th August 2012; since losing that day they have gone on an amazing unbeaten run.

The home side will need to plan for the pace and agility of Blackfield & Langley winger Ekow Elliot. A close eye will also need to be kept on ex-Saints forward Kevin Gibbens and striker Alex Baldacchino.

Recent League Form:
W Blackfield & Langley 1-0 Christchurch
W Blackfield & Langley 3-2 Portchester
W Bournemoth 2-4 Blackfield & Langley
D Hamworthy Utd 0-0 Blackfield & Langley
W Blackfield & Langley 2-0 Alresford

Newport IW:
On the other hand, Newport IW have their own fixture backlog, once again due to cup runs and bad weather. If the Port can maximise their games in hand, the islanders can go second in the table, within a point of league leaders Downton.

Alek Prezspolewski impressively bagged his 21st goal of the season against Lymington on Saturday and a home win would keep Newport in the promotion hunt, sending a message out to the Wessex League that the Islanders still mean business this season.

However, Wednesday evening is a bigger fixture than a simple “sixth plays ninth league game.” Just three weeks ago, Blackfield & Langley shoved Newport out of the Wessex League Cup 4-1, which meant an end to the 2012/13 unbeaten away record in all competitions that had been going so well for Newport. The Islanders will have a point to prove this time playing at St Georges Park.

Recent League Form:
D Lymington Town 1-1 Newport IW
W Newport IW 1-0 Hamworthy Utd
W Fareham Town 2-3 Newport IW
W Alton Town 1-3 Newport IW
W Newport IW 1-0 Downton

The visitors are playing catchup, meaning Wednesday evening’s fixture is bound to be a mouth-watering fixture.
