Disgraced parish councillor replaced after by-election

The by-election to replace disgraced parish councillor, David Whittaker – who was sentenced for child sex crimes at the beginning of the year – took place yesterday (Thursday).

Residents were asked to choose between former Isle of Wight councillor, Roger Dixcey or former parish councillor, John Ward.

According to Isle of Wight councillor, Chris Whitehouse, 357 residents made the effort to cast their vote, with 276 voting in favour of Mr Dixcey. Mr Ward attracted 81 votes.

After the results were announced, Roger Dixcey said,

“This is a great result. I am absolutely delighted that the people of Newport West have given me such a resounding majority. In return, I pledge to do my utmost to ensure that they are fully and effectively represented on the Parish Council.

“I have been involved with this area all my adult life and whilst it is a great place to live, it does have real problems that need addressing. I am looking forward to working closely with my fellow parish-councillors, the Island MP, Andrew Turner, and Cllr Chris Whitehouse who represents Newport West on the Isle of Wight Council. Together we will be a great team that can really make a difference for local people.”
