Following yesterday’s report about empty parking bays in Sandown since the introduction of extended parking restrictions, direct action was taken overnight to encourage a tidy up of the town.
Amongst the comments on Jon Platt’s photos of the empty parking bays and derelict shops in Sandown (which have been shared around 3,000 times on Facebook), residents are clearly upset with many of the owners of shops that have been closed down and left to rot.
Overnight, someone has placed posters on several of the properties along the High Street stating,
PLEASE TIDY THIS EYESORE
SHAME ON YOU

Name and shame
As well as the posters, which have been placed on several properties that have been left empty and untidy (some for years), Jon Platt has sought to name and shame those owners through Facebook.
Having carried out Land Registry searches, he’s named several of the owners of properties that have been left abandoned, one of which is Sandown North town councillor, Raj Patel. He owns the former Superbowl cafe.

Also thrown into the mix is a public call for Sandown councillors who voted in favour of the extension to parking charges to resign.
OnTheWight asked for a response from the Isle of Wight council to yesterday’s article.
The Executive member responsible, Cllr Luisa Hillard, said “it is far too early to make any judgements about the impact of these changes”.
