Isle of Wight operator Southern Vectis is celebrating today (Wednesday), after scooping a top accolade at this year’s UK Bus Awards.

The Newport-based firm has been singled out for a silver award in the ‘Making Buses a Better Choice’ category, recognising the contribution of its Island Coaster service in delivering a viable alternative to the car for visitors to the island.

Nineteenth year for awards
The UK Bus Awards scheme was founded in 1996. It was designed to develop further the Bus Good Practice Awards – which were set up by the Association of Metropolitan Authorities in 1991.

Managing director, Andrew Wickham said,

“This is wonderful recognition of our team here at Southern Vectis.

“Our focus, always, is on providing our customers with a high quality and reliable bus service.

“Providing visitors to the Isle of Wight with the opportunity to leave their cars at home and simply enjoy the array of delights on offer here, is also high on our list of priorities. And running the Island Coaster service is a superb way of doing just that.”

The Isle of Wight’s southern coast has breathtaking scenery and a number of picturesque attractions, like the Needles Park, Blackgang Chine and Dinosaur Isle. Also high on the list for many visitors are Tennyson’s Down and Alum Bay. A great link to any of these popular attractions, the Island Coaster runs daily through the summer, with departures from Ryde and Yarmouth.

Highly skilled and experienced professionals
Andrew added,

“We won’t be resting on our laurels though.

“Southern Vectis is fortunate to have a team of highly skilled and experienced professionals – and every one of them is motivated to further enhancing the services we offer here on the island.

“I’d like to congratulate all those who have contributed to a successful year.”
