As reported back at the beginning of the year, the 100-year-old lens and mercury system at St Catherine’s Lighthouse was decommissioned as part of Trinity House’s modernisation programme for all their lighthouses.
At the time there was a question mark as to where this historic Fresnel lens could be stored in order to remain on the Island.
News OnTheWight is pleased to be able to share with readers the news that the lens has been loaned to the Classic Boat Museum in Cowes, where volunteers have been working carefully to assemble the lens for display to the public.
Part of ‘Safety at Sea’ display
As you can imagine, handling something so precious must have been nerve-racking for the volunteers, but as you can see from the photos, they’ve done an amazing job.
The St Catherine’s Lighthouse lens will form part of the Classic Boat Museum’s ‘Safety at Sea’ display, including the Queen Victoria (1887) and Jessie Lumb (1939) lifeboats, which are very popular with schools and families.
Where and when
Visitors will be able to see the lens on display from 21st March 2023 at the Classic Boat Museum’s Boat Shed in Cowes.
Well done to all involved. See their Website for more information.
