12 Across: How Cryptic Could It Be?

Thanks to VB friend and contributor, Wendy Varley, for this little ditty. Ed

I’m ashamed to say I came unstuck with the cryptic crossword in yesterday’s Guardian.

The top right corner proved very tricky to decipher, especially one pesky clue for 12 Across.: “Opening number – singer’s last resort” (7).

Eventually I got some letters in, and learned a new word (chevrotain = a small deer-like mammal, apparently), so the pattern for 12 across became V*N****, but still I couldn’t nail it.

Later, I worked out the final letter must be an R. Could I see the answer? Nope.

Can you?

When the penny dropped, just before I went to bed, I kicked myself.
