Thanks to Alice for this news from Medina High School. Ed
Six students and three staff from Medina High School have just returned from a very cold trip to Kereva, Finland as part of the British Council funded Comenius programme. The Comenius project is part of an EU scheme to create partnerships across Europe and improve education standards.
Schools from across Europe including Italy, Belgium, Czech Republic and Spain joined Medina High School in Finland for this cultural exchange and to discuss the project theme Climate Change, Changes Choices.
Students highlighted use of geothermal heating
Groups of students from each country presented information about how their schools are trying to reduce their carbon emissions and more importantly, areas they need to improve on. Medina students highlighted the new Maths building that uses geothermal heating and natural light to reduce its energy consumption but also identified the need for car sharing schemes and the recycling of paper.
Students stayed with host families for the five day trip and experienced true Finish culture, eating reindeer, cross country skiing, riding in a husky sleigh and taking saunas in the snow. Great bonds were made between students and host families and many have been invited back for a second visit.
Year 10 student Chan Ford wrote of the visit, “It was an amazing trip, and we all wish we could go back!”
Mr Lines, Assistant Headteacher said, “The trip was a fantastic chance for European collaboration for both students and staff and an opportunity to experience a school functioning in extreme temperatures.”
We look forward to receiving the six schools in May for the conclusion of the two year project and to show them the beautiful Isle of Wight.
