Have you got a 4×4 and like the idea of helping out the Island community occasionally? Well, read on.
The Met Office has issued a Severe Weather Warning for the South region over the next few days, with a possibility of sleet, snow and icy roads on Saturday.
Rather timely then perhaps, that we bring you news of the Vectis 4×4 Response Group.
We’re sure you remember how some Islanders with 4x4s came to the rescue of many over the snowy period earlier in the year.
From that experience, a new group is being set up and we’re hoping that this appeal for members will mean that the group can go on to form part of the the National 4×4 Response Network.
What’s involved?
Members of Vectis 4×4 Response would work as volunteers, providing help for the community through the Isle of Wight Council Emergency Management Department, who the group is on the cusp of signing an agreement with.
Those who volunteer their time won’t be left out of pocket. Each mile that you drive while helping people on an agreed mission, you’ll get paid 40p – the maximum amount you can receive without getting taxed on it.
If you’ve just got a bog standard 4×4 and are worried your vehicle won’t be of help, you’ll be pleased to hear that it’s not a requirement to have a fully-loaded off-road 4×4, with winches, suspension lifts and mud tyres.
We’re told that the basic requirement is any form of 4×4 and a desire to assist the local community.
Learn to control your 4×4
If you’ve got a 4×4, but don’t feel confident in using it in slippery or very wet conditions, have no fear.
If you want to learn more about how to control your 4×4, Vectis 4×4 Response will provide training days that will allow you to develop your skills – be that driving or First Aid, etc.
Once you’re up to speed – or if you are already – you’ll become and ‘active’ member of the team.
Non 4×4 volunteers
But it’s not just drivers with 4x4s that the Group are looking to recruit, they also need an Honorary Secretary and a Treasurer.
So if you have the skills and time to lend for those positions, get in touch with Vectis 4×4 Response.
For more info have a look at the National 4×4 Response Network Website.
Hopefully, the Island won’t see too many problems as the Isle of Wight council have said they’re well-prepared for any bad weather now they have new gritters.
