Riverside Centre Faces Massive Rent Increase From Council – Again

Readers may remember back in early 2010, we reported that the Riverside Centre in Newport faced an uncertain future due to a proposed massive rent increase by the Isle of Wight council.

Riverside CentreThe threat of a rent increase has raised its head again this week, with the IW Council proposing to charge the Charity an annual rent of £100,000.

Update: 14:58 This is nearly twice the rate that the Riverside are currently charged.

Early this morning, VB asked Isle of Wight council about this, but at the time of publishing, they have failed to respond.

Outcry
There was huge public outcry (and a petition launched) that the centre, which is a hub for a huge number of voluntary and charitable organisations, could face closure.

Amidst the cuts placed on other areas across social care, the issue seemed to fade away and everyone thought the centre’s future was safe.

That is until now, Richard Priest from the Riverside Centre told VB today, “I’ve invited stakeholders to come to a meeting next Wednesday (12th) to hear from us what the issues are and to discuss the best way for us to deal with it.”

Stakeholder meeting
A meeting is being held on Wednesday next week (12th at 5.30pm) between the Isle of Wight Council Legal Services Department and stakeholders of the Riverside Centre to share the background to the current situation and the way forward being proposed by the Riverside Centre.

As many already know, the centre was built through fundraising by the Island community. The Riverside Centre Charity tell us that they are “continuing to seek clarification on the proposals and, given the history of the Centre, how the proposals will address the needs of vulnerable users of the Centre, together with the range of community groups supported by the multi-purpose resource.”

Will councillors attend the stakeholder meeting?
We wonder whether Cllr Roger Mazillius, now he is Cabinet member for Adult Social Care, will attend the stakeholder meeting. When we asked him last year why he hadn’t attended the previous stakeholder meeting, he replied,

“I have no interest in commenting to VentnorBlog, which I think is just a rant.”

I’m beginning to wonder whether these Tory leaders are becoming a bit deranged and turning County Hall into a lunatic asylum. Bedlam comes to mind.

There is one consolation to all these damaging and disgraceful Tory Council decisions, (none of which was in their 2009 bogus manifesto), it will give the opposition plenty of issues and material to fight the next local election.

I can’t help thinking too much…how long before people start dis-beleiving the facts in the face of so many disasters and start believing there is a conspiracy against the council

Quote from Cllr Mazillius, “I have no interest in commenting to VentnorBlog, which I think is just a rant.” By the recent press reports he can manage to ‘Rant’ all on his own. I do think though that it would be very usefull to both sides if the council attended this type of meeting. At least ‘All the Cards’ could possible be put on the table at… Read more »

The council tried closing it and failed – now it seems they have found another way, charging them a ridiculous rent. Last time I looked, it was a day centre for adults with disabilities? Does the council really not care what happens to these vulnerable adults? My neighbours son used to go to Sunnycrest in Newchurch but the council are closing that down too.

They can’t close it. They can up the MPs rent – Where would our MP have his offices? Could he share with Councillor Pugh? We are all in it together!

Now that would be a very interesting set up; especially if Miss C. Hofton acted as their joint secretary.

I can understand the council’s tactics, after all the the Conservative core voters in say, leafy Bembridge probably have not even visited that wonderful resource for vulnerable people called the Riverside Centre.

Mazillius reminds me of the TV character Alan B’stard MP.

Ever mindful of the need to find a solution; why not let the riverside charity have the building for a £1 if the council find it so difficult to fund? I mean that is what they have done to winter gardens, swimming pools & other buildings. Assuming of course it is the council’s to dispose of. The riverside charity must be considered to be a proper &… Read more »

What is amazing is the fact that, has been highlighted before, is this building has nothing to do with the IW Council, the building, the land it’s on, was all fundraised for independently from the Council, and somewhere in the brickwork is a plaque or stone stating that from when it was built. The IW Council has decimated support for vulnerable adults across the Island, and this… Read more »

Lets not forget that the council is not bothered about whether or not they actually own the building – I know at least one substantial residential home which was bequeathed to the Council with the condition that it was used for older people of the Isle of Wight. Its now rented to a private organisation and there is not an elderly person in sight. The council make… Read more »

Everybody posting comments on VB who are against this Tory mob should try to do everything they can between now and the next election to help get rid of them in 2013. Even discussing the way this Council are damaging the island with other people would help, as word of mouth can spread and reach quite a large audience over a period of time. Facebook and other… Read more »

Revolt – How? Few have the bottle on the IoW – A mass sit-in at County Hall is needed or blockade of the Council car parks – If they come to their Ivory Tower by public transport so much the better. No gain without pain. My wife and I visited the centre last week, and we were very impressed with with care and training that these vulnerable… Read more »

So if the Centre is forced to close what will happen ? Will the Council be in a position to sell it on? I am sure they would like to.

Are the lunatics running the asylum?

Private Eye seems to think so and also has commented that the IWCC is the most corrupt and probably incompetent authority in England.

As a born and bred Islander and as a Councillor, I have known the Rivercide Centre since the day it was first opened. The Centre is beneficial to all users, both disabled and able bodied. The Isle of Wight Council should support the Riverside and not make the rent so expensive that they are forced, possibly, to close. Richard Priest and the Riverside will always have my… Read more »

As I have said before there are too many councillors being paid far too much of OUR money, and their numbers should be cut to save US money, THEY WORK FOR US, the Riverside is a charity and therefore should only pay a minimal rent, it is a wonderful centre for all who need it and the caring people who work and give their help to the… Read more »

Declining to comment on the grounds that (s)he doesn’t think much of the interviewer is an old and utterly discredited politician’s reaction to finding oneself in a tight corner. If Cllr Mazillius has been correctly quoted, it just makes one wonder what he is trying to hide.
