CashIsland MP Andrew Turner has welcomed a new ‘Growing Places’ fund which is to be used to revive stalled building projects, boosting economic growth and creating new jobs.

Nationally the fund is worth £500 million and is being made available to Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs). Over £12 million has been provisionally allocated to the Solent LEP of which the Isle of Wight is a member.

Innovative proposals welcomed
LEPs must now put forward their proposals for how the money will be spent, with final approvals being made from January next year so that work can begin quickly.

Mr Turner said, “This fund will enable the Solent LEP to make decisions on how this money is spent based on local priorities. This money will make a real difference, providing jobs and boosting local economies.

“I look forward to hearing about the projects that the Solent LEP will be putting forward on the Isle of Wight. The money can be spent on improving infrastructure – which is essential for the health of the Island’s economy and I hope that innovative proposals will come forward to do this rather than simply spending the money on building more houses.”
