Ecoisland being referred to the Police by IW Council (Update 2)

Following OnTheWight breaking the story of Ecoisland Partnership CIC moving to liquidation two days ago, today the shock news has arrived that the Isle of Wight council have referred Ecoisland to the Police.

The council are asking the Police to investigate approximately £115,000, which they say is unaccounted for of £240,000 which the council passed to Eco Island to deliver the Government’s Green Deal on the Isle of Wight.

Updated 14:24 Back in January 2013, IW council announced that they were passing £250,974 to the Ecoisland Partnership.

Statement from IWC
After the impending liquidation of the Ecoisland Partnership CIC came to light, OnTheWight asked the Isle of Wight council how much money the council had paid to Eco Island over the years, below is the statement they just sent us.

Stuart Love, strategic director for economy and environment, said: “The council’s Eco Island vision was developed in 2008 as a broad based strategy for improving the social, economic and environmental sustainability of the Island. The council encouraged groups and organisations to embrace this ethos.

“The EcoIsland Partnership community interest company was set up by David Green independently from the council. The company’s liquidation has no bearing on the council’s aspirations to both make the Island more sustainable and to improve our economy in doing so. Many groups and organisations continue to strive for a greener, more sustainable Island in line with the Eco Island vision. The council is keen for this good work to continue and will be developing plans further through its new sustainability forum which met for the first time last month.”

“The council commissioned the EcoIsland Community Interest Company to deliver the government’s Green Deal on the Island using £240,000 funding from the Department for Energy and Climate Change. Having reviewed delivery of this project it would appear that approximately £115,000 of the £240,000 is unaccounted for and we have therefore referred this matter to the police to investigate.”

Ahh that word ‘aspirational’ again, and the other favourite ‘more’ gets another airing with ‘more sustainable’, I thought the vision was for the Island to be energy self-sufficient by 2020. Or was that just a framework for change?

Interesting to see that the County Press has suspended comments by readers on the Ecoisland affair as there are no legal restraints and it is surely a matter of considerable public interest. Could the County Press decision have anything to do with its endorsement of Ecoisland and subsequent supportive ‘reporting’? This is from the Ecoisland website: “The County Press have been absolutely brilliant about the whole Ecoisland… Read more »

I would also like to know where the supposed £260,000,000.00 grant (!) for our Island has gone. Although Council pilferings will never ever be admitted, we all know it goes on.

It’s for you lot to convince us otherwise… good luck!

I.O.W. Council leader David Pugh opened the Ecoisland vision in 2008 nice one Dave another really bad Conservative Council decision. More to come for sure.

Another Tory disaster to add to the list. They left us education in crisis, a Wight elephant school building, an unaffordable PFI mess, children’s and adult services in crisis, tourism axed, loos closed and now their eco-island vision under police investigation. I do hope the Island’s Tories are getting a grip and taking a very long hard look at how things went so badly wrong at County… Read more »

I agree.
However, I wonder if they see any disasters. You see, it seems to me, they did whatever they wanted. And got away with it.
“Shame on the lot of them”, indeed!

I hope the police get to the bottom of this. It would be interesting to know what salary David Green was drawing. As a community led organisation, you’d like to think that the guy running it would keep his salary low. According to one of the comments on the initial liquidation story, there were seven companies under the banner of ‘Ecoisland Partnership CIC’ incorporated very recently. Wonder… Read more »

His salary was 61K with 5K expenses as reported by the CP in February…

Thanks for this. Interesting sentence in that interview: “David will step down from his role of day-to-day management of Ecoisland CIC — replaced by a managing director — and take the reins as paid chairman of the ESC.” – trying to jump before the ship went down? Paid chairman too, not a bad way to put your feet up. It’s also interesting that, as someone who has… Read more »

I liked the way EcoIsland was initially put forward – a great name, and it sounded to be a community thing that would have us all pulling together, (yes, I was that naiive, it was all a long time ago). A bit later down the line, & it seemed to be all about one man and his private company, and he’d snaffled the name as well. I… Read more »

Notice how the use of ‘Island’ as part of their handle tends to be the kiss of death for an organisation?
For example: Ecoisland, Island First, Island Roads
Still Island Independents is the exception that proves the rule, isn’t it? Early days.

Corruption on the Isle of Wight “Shock horror”, I’m sure the council will come out smelling of roses and the guilty ones will have enough money, maybe (£115,000) to cover their legal defence! just a thought :)

It’s not just IOW council who have some explaining to do, the County Press has some questions to answer here. They acted as principal cheerleaders for this suspect organisation, there was never a word of criticism. Come on CP, let’s have an explanation and apology for your naïvety?

Sustainable development isn’t about green rhetoric, hand waving and dodgy voting, it never was. It is about real world engineering and behavioural changes and their joint application to find long term solutions. I have followed the Ecoisland developments as a student having been asked to write a paper on the CIC charter as my final exam. It’s alarming the damage that this kind of affair has on… Read more »

Maybe, but when all said and done the real loss is the time, 6 years of possible momentum……..gone.

Ecoisland failed financially. And their leader was arrested over financial questions. That’s it.

If that spells the end, then, it must’ve all been about financial success.

So, no need to mourn the loss of momentum, eh.

It did fail financially and that’s the point that it should never of been. The entire ethos of the initiative should of been one of leading the way to transition and resilience, instead the people have been left jaded and cynical towards what actually needs done. Far from mourning, the task is all to do, but that doesn’t detract from the fact that the entire thing has… Read more »

Sustainable, now there’s a word that needs understood, long since consigned to the dustbin of doublespeak.

I too, rather naively, thought that Ecoisland was a subsidiary of the Council, as they did appear to be very close. As I have previously mentioned, I was a little put out to see them splashing out on a nice, new shiny VW campervan, that I can’t afford. Can’t afford for myself but have contributed to. With this analogy in mind, how many times a day do… Read more »

Eco-island always seemed to me on a par with Dinosaur Island: a lot of Public Relations puff, and precious little of real substance. Behind it all is a very understandable desire to capitalize on the island’s assets – but in recent years, all too much of it has been tied in to the tourist industry, beyond which the Isle of Wight Council could see no further, and… Read more »
