It was with great surprise that we read a message posted by an OnTheWight reader to our Facebook wall yesterday,
He said,
“Someone ‘in the know’ told me last night that Tesco have put in a massive offer to buy Carisbrooke Castle. Apparently the plan is to pull the b*gger down and build a huge new superstore on the site.
“I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on that? It’s immaterial to me. I’ve never been to Carisbrooke Castle in my life.
“From what I’ve seen from the road the building looks more or less derelict?”
Surely not?
The historic castle in Carisbrooke, which was built in the 12th century on teh site that may’ve been occupied in pre-Roman times, seemed an unlikely target for the monolithic supermarket chain, but when we suggested that our reader’s friend may have been pulling his leg, he replied,
“I was shown the preliminary building plans.”
We decided to get in touch with our contact at English Heritage, Bryn Jones. When we told him what’d been suggested, he replied,
“Is it the 1st April?”
English Heritage: “Total Rubbish”
We were thinking along the same lines, but felt an official comment from English Heritage would be useful.
Rob Flower, General Manager at Osborne, was able to refute the rumours with a simple and to-the-point reply. He told OnTheWight,
“Total rubbish… Where do these people get such nonsense from !?”
Could it be possible that our reader’s friend may’ve been confusing sites in Carisbrooke and was thinking about the proposed Co-op store at the end of Wellington Road?
