Community rallies round after man in 80s mugged in broad daylight

Police were called to Ventnor High Street this morning to a report of an elderly gentleman being mugged.

It’s understood locally the man – in his 80s – was in the process of taking his pension out from the cash point when he was approached by an unknown man and all his money was taken.

Linda Bassett, who runs the Community Information for the Isle of Wight Facebook Group, was so upset to hear of the theft, that she’s organised a collection for the gentleman.

She’s inviting other residents to donate if they can and all the money will be collected and presented to the police to pass onto the gentleman next week.

How you can donate
Collection points have been set up at Tesco, Co-op and the Mill Bay pub on Ventnor esplanade between now and 3pm on Wednesday next week.

Islanders can also drop off any donations at the County Press office and shop in Pyle Street, Newport in envelopes marked ‘community appeal’.

Get in touch
Police confirm no arrests have been made.
