News reaches us that a new project by the Ventnor Partnership has just been awarded £3,000 by the Police Authority’s Crime Prevention Committee.
Great news for the Partnership and even better news for the young people who will benefit from the new Sports Development Programme.
It is hoped that by embracing the young people and encouraging them into taking part in sports activities, the project will divert young people away from crime.
The cash will go towards offering free entry or membership for young people, buying sports equipment, as well as providing transport to sports clubs.
So far five clubs have signed up (football, cricket, golf, tennis, rugby), but it is anticipated that more will follow.
The Partnership will need to get match funding, but having this promise of £3k from the Police Authority should enable that to happen easily.
Others awards across the Isle of Wight and Hampshire went to:
£3,000 to the Isle of Wight Challenge and Adventure Project to purchase new equipment to run activity projects for young people on the Island;
£3,000 to 1st Clanfield Scout Group for security measures on its new Scout hut;
£900 to Woodcraft Folk for a young drivers road safety project in Liss;
£3,000 to The Vine Drop In Centre to allow them to extend their services to homeless adults in the Aldershot area;
£3,000 to Home-Start Eastleigh to run self-awareness domestic abuse and drug alcohol misuse workshops;
£3,000 to Off-the-Record in South East Hampshire, allowing them to train volunteers to provide a free and confidential crisis and ongoing support service for young people;
£3,000 to a new Southampton Street Pastors project for the training of new street pastors to cover the city centre;
£3,000 towards the Sekura-Byk project in Portsmouth, which is looking to install a secure pedal cycle shelter in Commercial Road, a known hotspot for cycle-related crime;
£3,000 to the City Reach Youth Project, which runs youth clubs and school holiday daytime projects for young people in the St Mary’s and Holyrood areas of Southampton;
£3,000 to Over Wallop Parish Council for their community development programme, focusing on providing activities for young people;
Councillor Peter Mason, Chair of the Crime Prevention Committee at Hampshire Police Authority, said:
“We have a wide range of applications that come forward to the committee during the year, and I never fail to be amazed by the time and effort people put into projects to make their communities safer. I hope these schemes will all benefit from the Police Authority grants, allowing them to continue their good work long into the future.
