£70,000 discount on new loos in Lake after another local authority cancelled their order

Lake residents could get a new set of public toilets at a discount price, but parish councillors will have to move quickly.

After another local authority pulled out, a block of Danfo pay-to-use toilets are ready to be shipped out from Sweden and installed if the parish council says yes.

The new toilets — if approved — would stand where the New Road toilets currently are.

A £70,000 discount
Lake Parish Council would get a £70,000 discount for a block of two unisex and one disabled toilet — which would cost 20p to use.

The total cost would be just shy of £200,000, chairman Cllr Paul Brading said, with demolition, installation and some landscaping covered in the bill.

Discussed for six years
Cllr Brading said replacing the toilets was something the parish council had been discussing for the last six years.

He said the new toilets would cut the council’s electricity and water costs, as well as generate an income for the authority.

Whittaker: Will help stem recent spike in anti-social behaviour
Cllr Adrian Whittaker said the new loos would also help stem the recent spike in anti-social behaviour and vandalism noted at the New Road toilets.

The parish council would borrow the money needed through the Public Works Loan Board.

Public consultation
The parish council was looking to approve the toilets, and the loan, at its meeting on Thursday night and consult with residents after the decision had been made.

Decision delayed
However, concerns about properly consulting residents before taxpayers’ money was spent, raised by Cllr Tig Outlaw, have seen the decision shelved until the 15th December meeting.

Cllr Outlaw agreed the parish council needed to get new toilets but said it must do a proper consultation.

Residents will be able to look at the parish council’s Website or in the local ‘Ripples’ magazine which will be sent to every household in the village in the coming weeks for more information and have their say.

Six years. Enough said.

Six years would seem ample time for consultation.

Island, town, and parish councils seemed to have lost the ability to take initiatives and make decisions. Local governance seems mired in inertia, which is disappointing.

Only inept Councils operate this way.

So what is going to happen to the old block? Demolition? They are huge – probably as big as my house.

Great point. You’d think that might have been linked and used positively to demonstrate competent thinking. Potentially a site for sale? Joining the dots seems way too much to ask.

If there is a £70,000 “discount” available then clearly the units are overpriced. PWLB loans have to be repaid over a number of years and attract interest. It is unlikely that the “revenue stream ” of 20p will cover the cost of the interest so the precept in Lake will rise to cover costs. I would hope that the business case for these toilets will be presented… Read more »

As a Conservative Councillor, Outlaw will want to delay change and obstruct spending for as long as possible. It is he and his colleagues who are delaying the Island Plan and forcing IW Council to adhere to blanket central government rules to the detriment of sensible plannng policy on the Island.
Remember that come next election.

Whittaker: Will help stem recent spike in anti-social behaviour. Do you think that a shiny newbuild will be left alone by the yobs who claim that area as their own? There will be a small collection of 20p to attract them, not to mention the large shiny surfaces to Tag at leisure, especially if they get cleaned off every week or two. Do you think these feral… Read more »

I wonder if this toilet, like others currently being sold to Island local councils, is from the company owned by one Jon Gibley. An erstwhile Councillor who seems to be using his connections to hawk toilets to every council on the Island. For those with short memories, Gibley was formerly an independent councillor who jumped ship along with his partner in crime, Richard Priest to enable a… Read more »
