97 year old man dies after recent Binstead collision

The elderly man involved in a collision on Binstead Hill, Ryde on July 18 has died in hospital.

James Cannell, 97, from Binstead was walking along the pavement towards Ryde when it is thought he suffered a medical episode causing him to fall into the road where he was struck by a green DAF 7.5 tonne truck.

The incident happened at 11.32am.

Mr Cannell was taken to St Mary’s Hospital in Newport with multiple life-threatening injuries. He died shortly after 7.30pm on Friday (July 26).

A family statement reads:

“James was a talented musician who worked and played in the band on numerous P&O Cruise liners for over 20 years.

“He will be sorely missed.”

Police are anxious to hear from anyone who may have seen the collision, as well as anyone who saw an elderly man walking in that area shortly before 11.30am on July 18.
