Responding to the Secretary of State Angela Rayner’s announcement on devolution, Councillor Andrew Garratt (leader of the Lib Dem group on Isle of Wight council) said,
“Devolution means bringing decisions currently taken in the depths of Whitehall much closer to the communities they affect.
“The government’s announcement means we have a historic opportunity to work positively to get changes that truly deal with major Island challenges of the ferries, economy, health and communities.”
He went on to add,
“However, the government must give us an early and categorical assurance that the Isle of Wight will remain a standalone unitary council – as it has been for thirty years.
“On cross-Solent travel it is vital that devolution comes with powers and oversight on affordability, reliability and frequency.
“The new arrangements must also ensure that the Isle of Wight’s voice is heard as loudly and effectively as any of our mainland neighbours.
“Finally, we are disappointed that this year’s elections will be postponed. Residents have been rightly expecting to have their say on who represents them, particularly in ensuring that devolution truly benefits the Island.”
