A fall in Isle of Wight residents seeking out of work benefits

Figures published by the Office for National Statistics show that 3550 people in the Isle of Wight area were claiming ‘out of work benefits’ during September 2021 – these figures also include Universal Credit figures.

That’s a fall of 220 since August 2021, when there were 3,770 claimants, and a fall of 1,415 from September 2020 (4,965 JSA claimants).

Breakdown of claimants
Of those claiming in September 2021:

  • 2,110 were male
  • 1,440 were female
  • 5 were 16-17
  • 550 were aged 18 To 24
  • (310 were aged 18 To 21)
  • 1,945 were aged 25 To 49
  • 1,050 were aged 50+

That means 4.5% of the resident population of area aged 16-64 is claiming out of work benefits – 0.7% more than the rest of the South East (3.9%), and 0.5% less than the whole of the UK (5.0%).
