Thanks to Nat for this great news from Ryde Academy. Ed

Ryde Academy student, Aaron Gould, age 14, was presented with an Ogden Schools Physicist of the Year (SPOTY) award at the University of Portsmouth on 15 July.

He was nominated by Mrs Foot and Mrs Allen in the Science Department. They said,

“Aaron is an extremely hard working and conscientious individual who has shown, throughout the year, that he has natural aptitude for Science. He is a pleasure to teach and has a good relationship with both staff and his peers. Nothing is too much trouble and he is happy to work both independently and within a group.

“He possesses excellent analytical and data-handling skills shown in this ability to apply himself to mathematical problems. His contribution to classroom discussions are invaluable and I expect him to excel in Physics, and Science in general, in the future.”

Sponsored by the Ogden Trust
The awards are a national initiative sponsored by the Ogden Trust, with additional support from the South East Physics Network (SEPnet) for the Portsmouth awards. The Ogden Trust promotes the teaching and learning of Physics using a variety of initiatives.

This year fifteen Year 9 and eight Year 12 students from schools across Hampshire and West Sussex were named Portsmouth SPOTY winners, including four from the Isle of Wight.

Dr Jen Gupta, the Ogden/SEPnet Outreach Officer at the University of Portsmouth said,

“It was fantastic to be able to celebrate the hard work and dedication of so many talented young physicists. All of our SPOTY award winners should be proud of what they have achieved so far, and we hope that they will consider a career in physics one day!”

Aaron, his parents and Mrs Allen travelled to the University of Portsmouth for the awards ceremony where Aaron and the other winners each received a certificate and a £25 book token.
