Ventnor's Newport Road was temporarily closed after void discovery; swift repairs ensured safety and reopening
The graben structure on Newport Road, Ventnor is a geological fault
that is opening up at the crest of the Ventnor landslide, which creeps around 5 to 10mm per year in normal conditions, but in periods of heavy rain, it is found to creep up to about 35mm per year.
The highways contractor can only carry out remedial repairs to the cracks and voids that appear.
