Alex Dyke: Breast-feeding controversy hasn’t died down yet

Many might have assumed that Alex Dyke would’ve dropped out of National headlines by now, after the heat of last week with his suspension by the BBC after his comments on public breast-feeding on Wednesday’s Radio Solent phone-on sparked the outrage across the country.

Often these things don’t last over the weekend, but in this case, it’s still going.

The story has even gone international with a Turkish publication now covering it.

On Friday night he was picked out by Adam Hills on Channel 4’s The Last Leg comedy show as a contender for ‘D*ck of the week’, with Adam suggesting (video below) that the DJ looked like Garth from Wayne’s World and (using similar language Alex Dyke did about breastfeeding in public) that it was his hair that was unnatural and shouldn’t been seen in public.

The viewers of the programme were encouraged to vote #dyked*ck on Twitter

Alex won the vote with 50% of the vote.

Supportive petition
Alex Dyke’s fans have launched a ‘Bring Back Alex Dyke’ petition to try and counter last week’s petition that gained over 11,600 signatures to have him taken off air, before it was closed.

Three days later and despite it being shared on social media, the petition has attracted just 174 signatures (at time of publishing) – gaining an extra 40 this morning.

A number of people have added comments of support, such as

Jenny Chalk of Southampton:

I am disgusted that a mans job can be put at risk for using free speech! I’m fed up with the breast is best militant can have so much sway with The BBC Radio Solent that free speech is ignored by the politically correct brigade! What did our parents fight for if not this one ability

A number of new publications have picked up on the relatively low number of signatures asking for his return, including the Daily Mirror and Huffington Post.

Many comments on Facebook
Comments are continuing to be added to the Alex Dyke Show Facebook page, both in support and opposition.

The latest official posting, “Thank you and goodnight”, was posted at 11:19pm on Saturday night, showing a photo of Alex on a radio station in the US.

One of the posters left a link to the personal Facebook page of the person who started the original petition to have him removed from the BBC

This has been met with a lot of people reporting that person to Facebook, accusing them of bullying behaviour.

There’s quite a few people posting photos of women breast-feeding on there too.

Be aware – there’s some strong language in there.
