Alex Dyke: Breast feeding comments lead to 4,000+ signature petition to get him off BBC

An online petition to get Radio Solent DJ, Alex Dyke, off the airwaves has attracted over 4,000 signatures.

The Isle of Wight-based DJ was well-known during his time at Isle of Wight Radio for making controversial comments, so many will not be surprised to hear of this latest boob on the Beeb.

The petition, set up by Maisie Jameson from Sheffield, reads,

After listening to Alex Dyke’s BBC Radio Solent show, on the 12/08/15, I was utterly appalled.

His show was centred around breastfeeding in public, and how it was unnatural, unnecessary and unfair (for men, and some women), and also how MEN don’t like to see women breastfeeding in public.

He made comments such as, “breastfeeding is unnatural”, “formula milk is just as good” and “we’re not in the Stone Age any more”.

He also told a story, of how he was on a bus, and a woman rudely started breastfeeding her child – he later on defended his comment with “My point was fat chavvy mums with their boobs out on buses isn’t a good look. A classy discrete mum is absolutely fine”.

As his radio show was shared on two sites by myself – one for student midwives and one for breastfeeding mothers, there was a lot of upset caused, as people couldn’t believe the comments he came out with.

There is already a stigma around breastfeeding, and we don’t need ill-educated mysoginists like Alex Dyke to make it even more apparent.

In fact he was right. We’re NOT in the Stone Age anymore – we’re in the 21st century.

Breastfeeding is completely natural, and people must remember that breasts are for feeding – not for men.

You can listen to the radio show here (the programme has now been removed by the BBC from the iPlayer)

Please sign this petition to get Alex Dyke off air.
