On the day the number of positive Covid-19 tests on the Isle of Wight has increased by 50 per cent on the previous highest daily figure, the Prime Minister announces a proposed end to social distancing from 19th July.
In a press conference, the PM said the final decision on easing of Covid-19 restrictions would be taken on 12th July, but shared plans for what would happen from 19th July.
The main points
Although to be confirmed next Monday, the PM stated the changes below are planned for Step Four in the Covid recovery plan.
- All legal restrictions will end from 19th July
- Masks will no longer be be required by law to be worn, instead the guidance will suggest, “where you might choose to do so”.
- The 1m-plus social distancing rule will end and all legal limits on numbers meeting indoors and outdoors will be lifted.
- All businesses, including nightclubs, will be allowed to reopen.
- The limits on named visitors to care homes will be lifted
- Limits on numbers attending concerts, theatres and sports events will be lifted
- No Covid certificate required to attend events or venues
- Interval between vaccine doses for under-40s will be reduced from twelve weeks to eight
- Everyone over 18 should be double-jabbed by mid-September

The number of positive Covid-19 tests on the Isle of Wight has been rising over the last two weeks.
A week ago the seven day rolling rate was 33, today (Monday) it is 63, a rate per 100,000 of population of 44.68.
The cumulative number of positive Covid-19 tests on the Isle of Wight is 6,998, a rate per 100,000 of population of 4,963.12.
