Thanks to VB reader Seb for pointing us in the direction of this great news story for two Isle of Wight primary schools.
Even though it happened a couple of months ago and may have been reported elsewhere, because we love celebrating Island talent, we thought we’d share it for those who hadn’t heard.
Earlier this year, two Island primary schools took part in the well-established Grow Your Own Potatoes (GYOP) competition.
The Grow Your Own Potatoes project is all about teaching young people where potatoes come from, how they grow and that potatoes are a healthy food.
It’s been a huge success in schools across across the country and this year two Island schools bagged prizes for their entries.
And the winners are …
Northwood Primary School were the overall winners, with the heaviest crop. According to GYOP, the school grew an impressive 5400g of Rocket Potatoes.
Their prize for taking first place is an amazing allotment makeover.
Northwood Primary headteacher, Mrs Hussey, explained to VB that the Potato Council (who are behind the GYOP scheme) have recruited the help of horticultural students at the Isle of Wight College for the makeover.
Initial work to clear the space has taken place and the horticultural students will be returning to the primary school in the spring, to help with the design, build and maintenance of the allotment.
Northwoood not the only Island winners
Northwood Primary was not the only winner from the Island.
Brading Church of England Primary School managed to pick up regional runner-up prize for harvesting 3650g of Rocket Potatoes.
In return they get a super new bench for their playground, made from recycled materials.
Well done to everyone who took part in the competition.
