Following the recent green light for upgrades at the Isle of Wight’s only hospital, the ambulance station is now looking for the same treatment.
A support building is proposed to be built on the site of a former social club at St Mary’s Hospital, in Newport, by the Isle of Wight NHS Trust.
It would be connected to the current ambulance hub, with access off of Dodnor Lane.
Included in the new building
The new building will have office and training rooms, as well as a new staff break-room facility for ambulance and patient transport crews.
It will be built at a higher level than the current station so a pedestrian link bridge will connect the two buildings.
A “much-needed addition”
Planning agents, ERMC, say the plans represent a much-needed addition to the Ambulance Service on the Island, allowing for improved facilities to meet the increasing demands being put on it.
The upgrade is considered essential, they say, in aiding the Isle of Wight NHS Trust to meet its national service obligations and improve on efficiencies.
Recladding existing station
The plans have been submitted to the Isle of Wight council and would also see the existing ambulance station re-cladded — removing the current material, which contains asbestos, according to the planning agents.

The public consultation runs until 4th November.
