As part of its 30 year anniversary Earl Mountbatten Hospice (EMH) hosted its first Staff Sunflower Awards last Friday with each winner, nominated by their colleagues, being thanked and recognised for their hard work and contribution to the Hospice.
Sponsored by Isle of Wight Pearl the Awards were held in the new EMH John Cheverton Centre with guest host Paul Topping from Isle of Wight Radio and members of the Board of Trustees, Volunteer and Patient Ambassador joining together for an evening of celebrations.
Eight categories made up the EMH Staff Sunflower Awards with all staff, both clinical and administrative, being given the opportunity to nominate each other.
Almost 100 nominations were received and many people gave a lovely testimonial on just why they had put forward their colleague for an award. After several hours an independent panel managed to narrow down the nominees to a shortlist in what was an exceptionally difficult process before selecting the winners.
The awards
The categories and winners who took home a beautiful pearl gift, certificate and stunning sunflower were:
Our Sunflower Seed presented by Trustee Kate Newman. To recognise an individual who is considered to be an unsung hero within EMH. Winner Andy Pugh-Panther, Caretaker.
Our Roots presented by EMH President George Hibberd. Awarding the hard work of a team who have worked together which has brought immense benefits to EMH. Winner Earl Mountbatten Nursing Team.
Our Leaves presented by Sue Dorman, Manageress, Isle of Wight Pearl. Thanking an individual whose continued hard work and dedication really has made a difference to the jobs of others. Winner Brigid Plummer, Ward Manager.
Our Petal presented by Patient Ambassador Pam Warr. To celebrate that one person whose daily jokes, dress sense or just their general approach to life brings a smile to our faces. Winner Gary Barton, Catering Assistant.
Our Sunflower presented by Consultant Ian Johnson. A special award given on behalf of patients and carers to an individual who they consider to have made a real difference to them, their carers, family or friends. Winner Carol Thompson, Staff Nurse.
Our Dandelion presented by Trustee Kevin Berry. For an individual or team who implemented the most unusual and perhaps even ridiculous idea which has actually been a huge success. Winner Fundraising Team.
Our Sun presented by Volunteer David Harrison. Saying a big thanks to someone who always smiles and helps no matter how busy they are or how many times they are interrupted in a day! Winner Judith Stratton, Voluntary Services Team Leader.
Chief Executive and Trustees special thank you presented by Chief Executive Tina R Harris. For one special person who has been nominated for their ongoing outstanding contribution to EMH and all the people who work there. Winner Kath Bright, Retail Team Leader.
Chief Executive Tina Harris says; “Our staff are at the heart of Earl Mountbatten Hospice and they often contribute so much more than their day-to-day jobs. With so many nominations received I am inspired by the support and respect that people have for each other across all parts of the Hospice, and their commitment to ensuring we provide the best patient care possible. Even though only eight people on the night may have received an award everyone deserves a special thank you.”
