Bear Grylls Class Get Busy in the Kitchen

Whilst we were at Oakfield Primary school last week for the launch of Isle of Wight Monopoly, we noticed some very interesting pictures on one of the walls in the main hall.

Bear Grylls Class Get Busy in the KitchenThey showed pupils from the Bear Grylls class trying their hand at cooking. Curious as always, we wanted to find out more and teacher Eileen Eaton was happy to expand.

She explained that the shots were from a recent collaboration with the catering department at the Isle of Wight College, when the pupils were tasked with preparing and producing a three course meal for their parents.

Quite some task for 7-9 years olds.

Working with college students and staff
Yolande Farrer (one of the tutors at the college catering department), worked the class teacher on a plan designed extend and further inform the children’s knowledge and skills associated with healthy eating and the importance of maintaining a balanced and varied diet.

Working alongside college students, the primary school children gained experience in polishing cutlery, folding napkins, laying tables, chopping, dicing and sautéing veg. They were even able to try their hand at mixing batter for the puddings and pummelling herbs and spices into the Naan bread.

What a fantastically value learning experience for the young children, which by all accounts sounded (and looked) like great fun too.

Well done to all involved.
